SEDD, Sharjah Coop sign MOU

Sharjah Economic Development Department “SEDD” signed MOU with Sharjah Cooperative Society in order to support the implementation of the Sharjah Age Friendly city initative and create communication between generations by involving old people in commercial operations to transfer expertise to current generations, as well as to support and develop the local agricultural product. The memorandum of understanding, which took place at SEDD headquarter, was signed by Fahad Al Khamiri, Director of Registration and Licensing Department at the Department, and Rashid bin Huwaiden, Director of Supply Department at Sharjah Cooperative Society, in the presence of number of officials from both parties.

Commenting on the MOU, HE Sultan Abdullah bin Hadda Al Suwaidi, SEDD Chairman, said that the Department seeks to allow the elderly to easily benefit from the available resources to improve their quality of life and share their experiences with others. Such thing will contribute to achieving community development through the implementation of the Sharjah initiative in supporting of the elderly by displaying their agricultural products in all the headquarters of the Sharjah Cooperative Society in the emirate and promoting them. This is fall within SEDD’s strategies and plans of leading the comprehensive economic development of Sharjah and providing latest services to investors, in addition to creating sustainable social and economic environment.

Additionally, HE illustrated that this MOU will support both sides to serve the elderly in Sharjah. Also, it is considered an important achievement that is consistent with the wise directives of HH Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and is pursued by HH Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, and Chairman of Sharjah Executive Council. Their directives call for helping people to join the markets, practice economic activities as well as support their actions, initiatives and ideas in accordance with the standards of the global economy and international changes.

Likely, HE praised the role of Sharjah Cooperative Society in paying attention to elderly products and supporting such category. He also added that such strategic partnership has a remarkable impact on the growth of the national commercial aspect, and supports the sustainable economy in Sharjah.

From his side, HE Majid Salem Saif Al Junaid, General Manager of Sharjah Cooperative Society, expressed that the Cooperative Society focuses on elderly owners of local farms and works extensively to support their products and projects. He added that such thing goes in line with the wise directives of the leadership and falls within its strategies to promote the market and national agriculture products.

It should be noted that Sharjah Cooperative Society, as the first and largest cooperative society in the country, provides all facilities for farm owners to supply their agricultural products to the branches, in terms of procedures for farm registration, the mechanism of supply, priority for displaying products. Also, it coordinates with Department of Municipalities and Agriculture Affairs to work on providing guidance on local agriculture, and applying approved standards for organic farming and sustainable agriculture.

Al Junaid also added that Sharjah Cooperative Society worked to add services to the owners of agricultural crops, in order to improve the quality of services. It should be noted that it has provided about 120 workers in its more than 36 branches spread in the emirate, whose main task is to receive products from farmers, transport them from their vehicles, and display them in the right ways on shelves, giving priority to local product display.

Moreover, Al Junaid illustrated that the services provided by the Cooperative Society to farm owners will work to increase their income during the coming period. Likely, he pointed out that the range of services will also be expanded in the future to include the provision of vehicles to transport crops, including vegetables and fruits, from farms to all branches, which will save farmers from transportation expenses and increase the value of profits.
